💧 Topped — Privacy Policy

Effective date: August 6, 2026. Last updated: September 19, 2026.

Topped is a hydration reminder app. It sets a daily water goal that adjusts to your local weather, counts down to your next sip, and lets you log each glass with one tap. This policy explains what the app does — and does not do — with your information.

The short version

Topped is built to need as little of your data as possible. There are no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, and no tracking. Topped has no servers of its own — your drink history, settings, and reminders live on your device. Your location is sent to Apple's weather service so the app can look up your local temperature and UV index. If you create or join a friend circle, a small set of daily progress fields — never a volume, a goal, or your weight — is stored in iCloud so the other members of that circle can see it; see "Friend circles" below.

Information Topped uses

Location. With your permission, Topped reads your device's location and sends it to Apple WeatherKit to retrieve the current temperature and UV index for where you are, so hot or sunny days can raise your water goal. Your location is used only for this purpose, while you're using the app. It is not stored by the developer, not linked to your identity, and not used to track you. If you deny location access, your goal simply uses your profile alone.

Health data (optional). If you grant Health access, Topped uses it in these narrow ways and no others. It writes each drink you log to the Apple Health app as a water-intake sample (including drinks you logged before you turned Health syncing on). If you delete a logged drink inside Topped, it removes that same sample from Health — with one exception: a drink logged on your Apple Watch is owned by the watch app, and Apple only lets an app delete samples it wrote itself, so you may need to remove that one in the Health app. Topped also reads your water-intake samples, so that a drink you log on your Apple Watch appears on your iPhone and both devices show the same total; Topped only counts water samples written by Topped itself, and ignores those written by other apps. And it may read your body weight once to prefill your profile during setup — you can always type it manually instead. Topped reads no other Health data. Health samples stay within Apple Health on your device (and your iCloud Health data, if enabled), under Apple's control — not the developer's. You can turn syncing off at any time in Settings → Apple Health, and delete the samples in the Health app.

On-device data. Your drink history, profile (weight and activity level), and app preferences (such as your default glass size) are stored locally on your device using Apple's standard storage (SwiftData and UserDefaults). This information is not transmitted to the developer or any third party.

Friend circles

A friend circle is a small private group — friends, family, a household — who can see each other's daily hydration progress. Creating or joining a circle is optional; the rest of Topped works the same without one.

What leaves your device. If you create or join a circle, Topped stores these fields for each day you share: the percent of your goal you reached, a level word (such as "on track"), your streak in days, the date, a display name you choose (Topped suggests your device's name to start, and you can change it at any time), and an opaque iCloud identifier that keeps your entries attributed to you without revealing your Apple ID or real name. Topped never shares the number of ounces or milliliters you drank, your goal, your body weight, your activity level, your location, or the weather — those fields don't exist in the data a circle sends, so there's nothing to accidentally include. Reactions you send to another member's day (one of four emoji) are stored in the circle with your display name.

Where it lives. A circle's data is stored in the iCloud account of the member who created it, using Apple's CloudKit, and is visible only to the members of that circle. David, the developer, has no access to circle data at any point — it never passes through a server Topped operates, because Topped doesn't operate one.

The invite link. Adding someone to a circle means sharing an invite link. Anyone who has the link and is signed in to iCloud can join while the link is active — treat it like a key, not a guest list. Removing a member from a circle stops showing you their progress and stops sharing yours with them, but it does not invalidate the link itself; someone who still has a removed link could rejoin. If a link is compromised, dissolve the circle and start a new one.

Leaving and dissolving. Any member can leave a circle at any time from within the app, which stops sharing their progress with the remaining members. If the member who created the circle leaves or dissolves it, the whole circle — and everyone's shared data in it — is removed, because the data lives in that member's iCloud account. There is no ownership transfer in this version.

Notifications. Sip reminders are local notifications scheduled on your device. They are not sent through any server and do not involve any personal data leaving your phone.

What Topped does not do

Third-party services

Data retention and deletion

Because your data is stored on your device, deleting the Topped app removes its drink history and preferences from your device. Water-intake samples written to Apple Health are managed in the Health app and are not deleted by removing Topped — you can remove them there at any time. (Deleting an individual drink inside Topped does remove its matching Health sample.)

Permissions and your choices

You're always in control. You can grant or revoke Location, Notifications, and Health access at any time in the iOS Settings app (or, for Health, in the Health app under your profile → Apps). Turning a permission off may disable the related feature, but the app will continue to work for everything else.

Not medical advice

Topped offers general hydration guidance and is not a medical device. Its goals and reminders are wellness suggestions, not medical recommendations — consult a medical professional about your individual hydration needs.

Children's privacy

Topped does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children. The app collects no personal data on the developer's behalf.
